Aim: Local and extra-local dust events are one of the main factors of air quality reduction in arid regions. The main goal of the current research is to analyze the temporal changes of air quality in these areas based on an index based on both types of events called Pollution Dust Storm Index (PDSI).
Material & Method: In this study, the frequency of local and extra-local events during the statistical period of 2000 to 2018 was used to calculate the PDSI, and the Mann-Kendall test was used to evaluate the trend of temporal changes of this index in different time scales.
Finding: The highest dust pollution in the analyzed statistical period belonged to the cities of Zahedan, Chabahar, Nehbandan and Yazd, and the lowest air pollution was in Baft, Shahrood and Shahrbabak stations. The results of the Mann-Kendall analysis based on the average monthly values of the PDSI showed that significant incremental changes occurred for most of the stations in the month of June. On a seasonal scale, maximum and minimum dust pollution occurred in spring (PDSI=7.06) and autumn (PDSI=1.12), respectively. The Mann-Kendall test statistic values based on the seasonal values of this index showed the increasing trend of dust occurrences in the spring season, and their decreasing trend in the summer season for most of the stations.
Conclusion: The findings of evaluating the trend of changes in dust occurrences based on the PDSI index in dry areas of the country as one of the areas that are affected by the phenomenon of dust with different frequencies and intensities throughout the year, can be used to identify sensitive areas and provide necessary measures to prevent and reduce adverse effects caused by dust events pollution.
Innovation: Considering that in addition to local dust events, extra-local events also play an important role in changing the air quality of dry areas, analyzing the changes in the PDSI index as an index based on both types of events can better increase our understanding of the air quality of these areas. Therefore, due to the fact that the analysis of changes in air pollution based on this index has not been done for dry areas, it has been investigated in this study. The results of the present research can be an important step in identifying areas exposed to more air pollution and as a result, making better decisions to provide more effective solutions to reduce air quality in arid regions.
