Abstract: Carpet weaving is one of the most ancient and prominent Iranian traditional industries that in rural areas constantly, alongside agriculture, considered as a most important source of income. Contemporary, Especially in the past few decades due to structural changes in the national economy, urbanization growth, industrialization and bureaucracy based on oil revenues caused broad social and economic changes, including in rural areas. This condition led to downturn in traditional economic activities like carpet weaving in many rural areas. Therefore this research investigates recognition and analysis of effective factors on carpet weaving occupation decline in three villages of Malayer Township. Methodology is exploratory and used qualitative and quantitative techniques. First, 15 semi-structured interview with local experts held for recognizing factors that caused decline in carpet weaving in case area, accordingly, based on qualitative data coding method identified 16 influencing factors in downturn of carpet weaving. Then findings of this stage were used as base for design questionnaire in Likert spectrum framework, to examine local people views about downturn of carpet weaving. Then hierarchical clustering method was used to analyze the questionnaire data. Based on respondents' views the main cause of downturn carpet weaving occupation in case area is "rural families' tendency to urban culture and lifestyle and incompatibility of this with rural traditional lifestyle and livelihoods" and the least important cause is "health problems of traditional carpet weaving at home".
